Katalina Caliendo sees her ceramic sculptures as catalysts in exploring metaphors for relationships between humans and environments in the material and natural world. She sculpts objects inspired by the sensorial and indeterminate experiences of being. Emotive pieces that have connections with landscape, environment and the species which they are comprised. Her key sculptural work is made, in a technique she’s been credited to have mastered called Imbrication where she layers minute clay pieces in overlapping accumulations, inspired as part of a body of work derived from a micro-ethnography on beaver re- wilding and the aspect that they build dams and lodges ‘one piece at a time.’
These works have evolved to tell other stories and are made like small particles coming together to form a whole. To quote an interview with ‘Homo Faber’describes this technique/ series “Her objects are spellbinding sculptural pieces which represent a form of artistic and existential dialogue.” Collaboration has also been a continuous component in her practice and she’s designed projects which have incorporated collaboration with other species, visual artists, sound artists, as well as, environmental and social scientists.
Katalina is a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust Scholar, holds a Masters in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art and BA(HONS) in Contemporary Design Crafts from the University of Hertfordshire. She’s shown work at Collect Art Fair, London Design Week, and London Craft Week.
