Simon Dredge

Simon Dredge is an English ceramic artist whose work delves into the profound impact of history in shaping cultural understanding, specifically the LGBT community. Working primarily in porcelain from his studio in Liverpool, he creates pieces that not only honour the resilience and evolution of gay history but also invite viewers to engage with layers of photo images, ceramic glazes, acrylic paints, and watercolours, each of which interact on the surface to bring depth, texture, and emotion to his work.

Simon has been notably influenced by the secret language “Polari,” an underground slang that once served as a shield for the gay community, and by filmmaker Derek Jarman, whose vision and impact deeply resonate with him. He believes that “history is a fabric woven with stories that should never be forgotten.” Simon’s work reflects this ethos, bringing forth narratives that are often sidelined or overlooked, particularly in LGBT history.
