Vicky Lindo and William Brookes Ceramics

Vicky Lindo and Bill Brookes have been making ceramics together since 2013, working from their studio in Bideford, on the North Devon coast. The couple’s work draws on subjects as diverse as classical mythology, the natural world, politics and history; as well as their own day-to-day lives.
Vicky discovered a passion for sgraffito ceramics after being inspired by the outstanding collection of North Devon slipware housed in the Bideford museum where she once worked. Bill is a master mould maker, he employs experimental construction techniques using plaster moulds to explore the structural and decorative potential of slip casting. Their ceramics are vessels for storytelling, and Vicky uses the traditional method of sgraffito to convey political and social narratives through personal observation.
In 2017 the couple won the Elle Decoration British Design Award, and in 2019 won the British Ceramics Biennial Award for Dead Dad Book, which is a collection of twelve large-form vessels that tell the moving story of Vicky’s father, who came to Britain as part of the Windrush Generation. It explores the themes of migration, racism and identity and was acquired by the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. They also have work in the permanent collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and Aberystwyth University Ceramics Collection.
