Internationally recognised South African ceramicist Hylton Nel will be featured in our display, which includes vases, bowls, and cats all imbued with Nel’s signature style.

His body of work, which takes inspiration from everything between Chinese ceramics to biblical references, spans decades and has consequently inspired many, most recently the creative director of Christian Dior, Kim Jones, for the Summer 2025 collection.

Hylton Nel’s legacy includes not only being a prolific ceramist but also being the inspiration for the unofficial “School of Nel.” The artists in school channel the motifs and style of Hylton’s work and impose their own vision and interpretation.

One of the first artists to be inspired by Hylton is Nico Masemola, who is also featured in our display. Hylton instructed Nico in his studio, paving the way for his successful career as a ceramist. Though there is an undeniable affinity for the playful aesthetics of both Nel and Masemola’s work, Nico’s detailed, nuanced construction and bold use of colour set it apart.

Award-winning ceramists duo Vicky Lindo and Bill Brookes will also be featured in our presentation. Their works are inspired by Hylton Nel and also draw on subjects as diverse as classical mythology, the natural world, politics, and history, as well as from their day-to-day lives.

The pair have won awards such as the Elle Decoration British Design Award and in 2019 won the British Ceramics Biennial Award for Dead Dad Book, which was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and is currently on display.

This show will feature new bodies of work by Dan Hollings and Teddy Hansen.

Dan Hollings, who is fresh from a residency at Hotel Corazon in the mountains of Mallorca, is exhibiting colourful and dynamic paintings. Holling’s paintings take elements from the natural world, such as flowers and fields, and combine them with the supernatural world, like angels and devils.

Teddy Hansen crafted a new collection exclusively for LAF, elevating his humorous narrative painting style with intricately detailed images. Staples from Hansen’s work, such as dogs and dynamic figures with intriguing backstories, are more refined in his packed compositions.
