Katrin Moye’s pair of large-scale ceramic syrup jars, Figs and Eggs and Twigs and Berries, are adorned with decorative motifs that explore historical symbolism and personal literary influences. Twigs and Berries references 18th-century slang for male genitalia, while the fig has long served as a visual metaphor for the vagina.
Katrin’s enduring love for the 18th-century classic novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne also plays a role in the work. One of her favourite anecdotes from the novel involves a traveller negotiating with a peasant woman selling a basket layered with figs and eggs. This story is echoed in the trellis-like decoration over the female jug, blending humour, symbolism, and literary homage in the design.
